Recording for the installation Lick which is going to be used at the opening of the 2008 Sound Festival, and at the festival's saxophone weekend.   The piece features Ben Waghorn (tenor sax) and James Morton (alto sax). Lick was constructed as follows: first a rhythm section (Jim Barr on bass, Trevor Davies on drums and HD at the piano) recorded a rhythm track, which gave backing for a 2-chorus blues head followed by five different sets of blues changes, each played five time, followed by the head again. Then the sax players recorded five different takes playing and improvising over this backing.   These takes were done 'back-to-back', and the players were not allowed to listen to what they or each other had done.   In performance Lick is different combinations of these takes superimposed on one another.   The object was to create some furious chance counterpoint and interplay.   The rhythm section is never heard.
